What is Lung Cancer

Lung cancer develops when abnormal cells in the lungs grow uncontrollably, forming tumors. These tumors can affect lung function and, if malignant, may spread to other parts of the body. The two primary types of lung cancer are:

- Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC): The most common type, accounting for about 85% of cases, which generally grows and spreads more slowly.

- Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC): A more aggressive form of lung cancer, known for its rapid growth and spread, requiring prompt, intensive treatment.

At B.N.D Onco Center, we offer comprehensive treatment for both types of lung cancer, utilizing state-of-the-art technologies and a multidisciplinary approach to care.

At B.N.D Onco Center, we focus on screening, treatment, and palliative care offering Quality of life to the patients

Causes of Lung Cancer

The primary cause of lung cancer is the long-term exposure of lung cells to harmful substances, particularly tobacco smoke. Over time, this exposure damages the DNA in lung cells, leading to mutations that cause cancer.

  • Tobacco Smoke: Contains thousands of toxic chemicals that damage lung tissue, creating the ideal environment for cancer to develop. Smokers and those exposed to secondhand smoke are at the highest risk.
  • Radon and Other Carcinogens: Radon gas, asbestos fibers, and occupational exposure to chemicals such as arsenic and nickel can also lead to DNA mutations in the lungs, increasing cancer risk.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer

  • Persistent Cough: A cough that doesn’t go away or gets worse over time.
  • Chest Pain: Discomfort or pain in the chest, especially when breathing deeply, coughing, or laughing.
  • Shortness of Breath: Difficulty breathing or feeling winded during everyday activities.
  • Hoarseness: A change in your voice, often described as raspy or hoarse.
  • Coughing Up Blood: Even a small amount of blood in mucus should be evaluated by a doctor immediately.
  • Unexplained Weight Loss: Sudden and unintended weight loss may be a sign of lung cancer.
  • Fatigue and Weakness: Persistent tiredness that doesn’t improve with rest.
  • Recurrent Lung Infections: Frequent episodes of bronchitis or pneumonia can indicate lung cancer.

Risk Factors for Lung Cancer

While anyone can develop lung cancer, certain risk factors increase the likelihood of being diagnosed with the disease. The most common risk factors include:

  • Smoking: The leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for approximately 85% of cases. Even if you’ve quit smoking, the risk remains elevated for several years.
  • Secondhand Smoke: Exposure to secondhand smoke significantly raises the risk of lung cancer in non-smokers.
  • Radon Exposure: Radon, a radioactive gas found naturally in soil and building materials, is the second leading cause of lung cancer, especially in non-smokers.
  • Exposure to Carcinogens: Prolonged exposure to asbestos, certain chemicals, or diesel exhaust can increase the risk, particularly in certain industries.
  • Air Pollution: Chronic exposure to high levels of air pollution is linked to a higher incidence of lung cancer.
  • Family History: A genetic predisposition may elevate the risk if a close family member has had lung cancer.

At BND onco center, we focus on both screening and treatment, palliative care, and offering a quality of life to the patients.
