What is Multiple Myeloma

Multiple myeloma is a type of blood cancer that originates in the plasma cells, which are white blood cells found in the bone marrow. These plasma cells produce antibodies to help the body fight infection. In multiple myeloma, abnormal plasma cells multiply uncontrollably, interfering with healthy blood cell production and damaging bones and organs.

Symptoms of Multiple Myeloma

Symptoms can vary depending on the stage and individual, but common signs include:

  • Bone pain, particularly in the spine and ribs
  • Frequent infections due to weakened immune function
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Anemia (low red blood cell count)
  • High blood calcium levels, which may cause nausea, confusion, or constipation
  • Kidney issues due to protein buildup
