What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the skin. It is often caused by UV radiation exposure from the sun or tanning beds, although other environmental and genetic factors may also play a role. Skin cancer is highly treatable when caught early, making regular skin checks essential.

Types of Skin Cancer

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common type, usually slow-growing and unlikely to spread.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Often develops on sun-exposed areas and can be more aggressive if untreated.
  • Melanoma: The most serious form, melanoma can spread to other parts of the body if not detected early.
  • Merkel Cell Carcinoma: A rare but aggressive form often linked to immune suppression.

Risk Factors for Skin Cancer

Factors that increase the risk of developing skin cancer include:

  • Excessive Sun Exposure: Especially without protection or during peak hours
  • Tanning Bed Use: Artificial UV exposure is linked to higher skin cancer risk
  • Fair Skin: Lighter skin types with less melanin are more susceptible
  • Genetics: Family history of skin cancer
  • Age: The risk increases with age, though melanoma is common in younger individuals too
  • Immune Suppression: Weakened immune systems can increase susceptibility
